My legitimate name is Shara A Khamis and I was born in Zanzibar.
I consider myself a productive single mum as well as grandmother.
As a kid, I was sent to Pemba Island (sister Island of Unguja) Zanzibar to acquire my primary and high school education. I finished my Secondary Education in 1982 and in 1992 I went to the University of Strathclyde (Scotland) to pursue a postgraduate degree in Environmental Education. Later on, in 1995 I took Management on Community Development studies at a University in Ireland.
I have been a civil servant for a period of 11 years from Deferent Ministries of Zanzibar. One of my most challenging position was being Head of Environmental Education in Zanzibar, which has never been political neutral.
I currently work as a consultant on a voluntary basis, I work with International and local NGO’s for development projects.
As a self-employed middle aged woman, I have a small cooking class company called Tangawizi Cooking Class where I earn the daily bread for my family.
I married twice and divorced once and I am a mother of four kids, three daughters and one son. Currently all my kids are grown, living their own lives, except one of my daughters who still lives me, due to suffering a mental disability (Schizophrenia). Me and my daughter we both face our challenges in various ways on a daily basis, however, we have learnt to survive it. Life goes on and disregard problems coming our way, there are always solution that will allow us to move on.
Thanks God, my kids and grandkids comfort me and are a constant source of vitality during hardship and emotional time.
Working with local people and taking care of the environment help me enjoy life outside of my home; for me, it’s a kind of therapy that keeps my mind clear.
In life we have goals, some goals take longer than we expected. My goal in life is to build my dream house by the beach, as I want to continue having positive vibes as I age and what better scenery that the lovely beaches of Zanzibar to keep you uplifted. Unfortunately, I couldn’t reach this goal yet as there have been circumstances which have prevented me to accomplish it, so far. All this said, I am not giving up on it and I am on the search of methods that help me make it a reality. I’m on it!
In the meantime, my mini goal is to write a hard paper cookbook of Zanzibar yummy food!!
