Part of what fuelled my healing dance quest are the beliefs I bought into as a young child after learning my maternal grandma had died of breast cancer. Having two younger sisters I spent much of my younger years fearing one or all of us were destined to suffer the same. It was around aged twelve when I had a revelation of sorts and I realised it didn’t have to be that way for us.
I didn’t have to be a victim of my genes and where had I got that idea from anyway?
Most importantly I realised that I needed to know myself completely. If I didn’t know how to ‘drive’ my body and connect to her fully then my vehicle (my body) would be going in one direction whilst my soul and spirit went in another. My simple starting point at that time was that I knew when I danced or turned I felt happy. I had known this since I was three years old. Like many of you as a child I would spin and spin myself until I fell over dizzy with laughter. In my childhood dance world I learnt how to control my physicality by following someone else’s instructions in technique (gymnastics, ballet, tap, jazz dance), however the mind and emotions were bypassed. I didn’t know how to connect to my heart to then express my feelings through my body, especially when performing. I had to learn how to let go of the strict body-mind discipline I held myself under and thus began the engagement of an open two-way dialogue with my body. This meant I could explore my ingrained physical, mental and emotional conditionings; unravelling and re-writing them from a space of choice. “No one is fixed until they make the effort to change.” – Bruce Lipton Through quantum physics it’s known that we cannot destroy energy or create energy from nothing. It can only be converted or transferred into something else, or we can add to or filter energy that is already present. When we look at or acknowledge energy (our emotions) metamorphosis happens due to what we are feeling being completely seen. Imagine taking full responsibility for the subconscious self-sabotaging programs that are unconsciously ruling your life? Your thoughts, words and actions becoming transparent so that you can go beyond the unknown manipulations your body carries whilst connecting to the innate wisdom of your ancestors. An empowered zero point where you would have the awareness to re-shuffle, release and thus choose what you allow to be the r-evolutionary building blocks of you. This is where ancestral patterns heal and societal conditionings cease to have power over you. “Through self-consciousness, the mind can use the brain to generate “molecules of emotion” and override the system. While proper use of consciousness can bring health to an ailing body, inappropriate unconscious control of emotions can easily make a healthy body diseased,” – Bruce Lipton We are in a state of delta and theta brain waves until the age of seven. These brain waves create a dreamy, hypnotic state where we are most open to programming and absorb everything around us. This can be in the form of television, computer games, school, family, society, religion etc. It sets the foundations of who we become and the belief systems we hold. These beliefs that we get so attached to are often not our own. To reconstruct consciously we need to take ourselves back into a repetitive state of motion where we can be present to what is holding us captive and let go of what is no longer serving us. Remember it’s all about choice, so you might choose to retain and also reclaim fractured parts of you too. The body conforms and adapts to the dominant belief system he/she is carrying. I call it the root of the root. Often this is related to our ancestral line. Bear in mind you are the product of your ancestors who survived all kinds of generational scenarios. Each one is looking out through your eyes with their own filter of their perception of the world. Your blood chemistry is wired to react to certain situations and triggers. When you can surrender to those provocations, acknowledge them and move within them, you are well on your way to liberation. Much of what stops us making these changes is the fear of the unknown and often those fears as well as shame, guilt etc. have been passed down subconsciously through our lineage. Fear commits us to behaviours that keep us safe, conforming and away from death. “Your perspective is always limited by how much you know. Expand your knowledge and you will transform your mind.” ― Bruce H. Lipton Many people experiencing Awakened Bellydance have felt the invisible fascia of connectivity in the room as our seemingly individual energies unify and become one field of inter-communication. I often experience this as an electric ripple running through my body. It’s at these moments that I know the collective energy of the group is shifting and an emotional break-through is about to take place. This can start with one person or simultaneously several people erupt and a domino effect is created throughout the space. ‘The idea is that there is a kind of memory in nature. Each kind of thing has a collective memory. So, take a squirrel living in New York now. That squirrel is being influenced by all past squirrels’ Rupert Sheldrake The ancients knew how to access our bodies’ intelligence. Many forms of sacred dance and ritual involved repetitive movements, breath and circles. From the classical dance disciplines of the Indian and Egyptian temples, to the Whirling Dervishes, to the Zar trance dances, to the Shakers, to circular folk dances like Dabke, to more recent mystics such as G.I.Gurdjieff and Osho. Even if we have never studied these sacred dances we can access them when we are in certain brain/mind states through the collective morphic field, almost as if something within our cells remembers. Sometimes people experience the same ‘memory’ as another person in the group, or recognise each other as souls they’ve known in another place and time in different physical bodies. By becoming so entranced with our own being whilst surrendering to a conscious self-hypnotic state self-created miracles can happen. An inner alchemy of self-initiation can be activated by simply turning or shaking which has the potential to bring momentous internal transformation.
So how can you work with your body to restore your original self?
Plant your feet firmly on the earth and hip width apart. Close your eyes. Breathing through your mouth shake your body from the ground up and gently let go of your pelvis, arms, head and chest. Shake through your body for nine minutes. The quicker you breathe the more intense this will be. Imagine you are shaking off the layers of ancestral emotions that you have been holding onto as your own. Allow sounds and words to be expressed if needed. Feel the vibration of liberation moving into your heart and out through your fingertips as your root chakra grows deeper and lighter. Listen to your body and allow him/her to move you in a repetitive movement. Either side to side, forward and back, circling etc. Imagine the soothing, rhythmic movement is acting as a resetting of you. Continue the meditative moving and speak out loud any limiting patterns that you wish to release.
Feel yourself becoming lighter and allow your body to move freely expressing the known and unknown patterns that you hold. Let them go thanking them and your ancestors for the lessons you have learned from them. Trust and know that you now have the sovereign power to choose who you are. Bring your palms to the earth and breathe out any remaining residues. Sit quietly and drink water. Remember your body carries great intelligence. He/she holds all of the answers you are looking for, if you can allow yourself to surrender. This process may need to be repeated several times. Not everything will be released at once and only what your soul is ready to heal at this moment. Katie Holland. Lifestyle. Menopause. Meditation.
